(This is the first post in a 30-Week series – Getting to Know God.)
Prophecy and Horoscopes
In my catechism class and in sermons since I have been told that reading horoscopes and leaning toward astronomy is the work of the devil. I was instructed that believing in such things separates us from God.
What is your sign?
Although God is the ruler over the sun, moons and stars, He is the only one who can lead us and deliver us from a course of destruction and death. Yet many will counter that reading horoscopes in the daily newspaper or having palms read are merely a fun and interesting exercises. What harm can it be to read what your day, week or year will be like in the future?
Jesus’ coming is predicted
In the 7th chapter in the book of Isaiah, a challenge is made to Ahaz by King Rezin of Aram and King Pekah of Israel. God is ready to defend Judah, despite her wickedness and tells Ahaz to request a sign. Then he arrogantly refuses to do so. Isaiah then says the Lord himself will give Ahaz a sign, where he likes it or not. The sign the Lord gives has nothing to do with the impending battle, but rather then with the coming of a Messiah, a Savior.
“Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:13-14
How often has a horoscope or tarot card reading been accurate in my life?
In the summer of 2009, I lost my career to the fiscal crisis that hit the United States economy. I had worked hard for many years to attain my position within my company and along with my husband provide a nice, comfortable life for us and our two sons. And when I lost my job, I was in my late forties. Who would hire me when many people younger than I with more education and far less responsibilities could pick up and move and be hired for much less compensation were also available?
As a person of faith, I turned my daily and nightly pleas for direction and answers to God. Yet desperate I also was looking for immediate answers. Ah! Horoscopes! And what I found myself doing by reading my daily horoscope was living in a reactive state versus being proactive with prayer.
Here is an excerpt of a prayer from a page in one of my prayer journals at the time:
Dear Lord, I give you all the praise and glory. I am desperate for answers. Guide me, direct me, help me not to lose everything for the benefit of my family, please Lord answer me. Forgive for looking for answers in the wrong places, forgive me for doing what I have been told time and time again not to do. I do not want to be separated from you, Lord. Help me to understand and more importantly help me to accept YOUR timing. I trust in You. I love You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen
Amen ‘Let it be so’
Isaiah 9:1-10: Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—
2 The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned.
3 You have enlarged the nation
and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.
4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor.
5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.
6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty
will accomplish this.
The LORD’s Anger Against Israel
8 The Lord has sent a message against Jacob;
it will fall on Israel.
9 All the people will know it—
Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria—
who say with pride
and arrogance of heart,
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
but we will rebuild with dressed stone;
the fig trees have been felled,
but we will replace them with cedars.”
The next 7 years
During the 7 years after my dismissal from my job, I was blessed to arrive in the company of ‘angels’ that helped me to find work and guided into me starting a contracting business that helped take care of my family. I think about how many families lost their livelihoods, their homes, their families, so much more than my family. In addition to helping me start my business, my fat retirement fund was used to finance that and help my family not only keep our home but our vacation home, our cars, and the college funds for our two sons. We could have lost so much more had I been reactive and relied on a newspaper horoscope than trusting God’s timing.
(It wasn’t that other people and their families did not believe in God, but I believe God has a plan for each of us and He teaches us about His plan through our individual adversities if we trust in His Word and in His timing.)
God’s timing was perfect even though I wasn’t always perfect about harnessing my emotions when clients didn’t appear as often as I wanted or when they didn’t pay timely. I did keep my promise and I continued to pray proactively keeping my lines of communication open with God through my daily prayer journal rather than through a daily horoscope reading. God kept his promise too.
What is the harm in relying on horoscope readings? I found that in my weakest moments it separated me from God who has the power to deliver me and give me an everlasting life through Jesus Christ.
The prophecy of Jesus’ coming
Luke 1:26-33: In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Relying on the stars or the Son of God?
In the summer of 2016, almost exactly 7 years later I was hired full-time with a reputable and stable national bank mortgage company. Although I am earning half of my prior income, I love this job, my co-workers, and I’ve never been happier. Even if it were to end again tomorrow, I know God’s timing is perfect and His Word never fails. I trust in His plan for me because He has shown me that I can.
Luke 1:34-38: “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.” 38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
Lord Jesus Christ, stay with me. There is evil around me, and I am often attentive to it. It is beautiful sometimes, and sensible, and practical and friendly – or so it seems.
Lord Jesus Christ, stay with me. There is evil within me, and I am so often attentive to it. I am so easily overcome by my present circumstances and my own desires and to be free of everything that causes me pain and anguish and to be free to do whatever I want.
Lord Jesus Christ, give me the real freedom of Your life in me. By Your victory over temptations make me victorious. By the power of Your love make me strong. Help me to be strong in the acceptance of Your Word and in Your timing.
Lord Jesus Christ, without You I will fall. With You I can stand against evil. Stay with me. I pray Jesus’ name, Amen.
(The above prayer was adapted from a prayer in the Lutheran Book of Prayer.)
May I pray for you?
The Prayer Journals is my personal spiritual journey in conjunction with writing my spiritual memoir. My posts in 2018 are a series relating to this theme. If you have just joined The Prayer Journals, I hope you will take the time to explore previous posts on this site.
Please reach out to The Prayer Journals if I can answer any questions about keeping a prayer journal of your own. A prayer journal is an intimate communication between you and God. You don’t have to be a master writer. Perhaps you are an illustrator, a painter, a poet, a lyricist or creator of scrapbooks. Use your gifts to communicate with God however you wish in your prayer journal.
Blessings on your day,
