Getting Our Attention, A Faith Series #4

What if God had not gotten my attention with the meltdown of 2009 and ended my career in the summer of 2009?

What if God had not pleasantly surprised with the unforeseen expectation of marriage so soon after publishing my personal ad in the local newspaper in January 1992?

What if I didn’t recognize all the people who unexpectedly came to my rescue, influenced and encouraged me throughout my life as one of God’s angels?

Would I have recognized God?

Would I have recognized He had answered my prayer or when?

When the answer to prayer is “no.”

Has God answered all my prayers?

What happened when God didn’t answer my prayer? Or did He?

In 2006, my husband and I listed our house for sale. We wanted to move to a bigger house, preferably further out in the country and closer to my mother and her husband. Since my father had died prior to my marriage and having a family, my mother’s husband was my son’s grandfather. We all loved him. At the time, he was battling multiple myeloma, bone cancer; and we wanted to be near them in case they needed us.

We spent many weekends searching for a new home with little action on our current one. We were losing heart that we would be able to move. Finally, after many months, we took our home off the market and resigned ourselves to remaining in our current home. Sadly, in June 2007, our sons’ papa passed away.

It would be two years later that our financial house came crashing down when I lost my job that summer of 2009. Looking back, my husband and I were relieved that we had not moved because we surely would have lost that home possibly due to foreclosure. We found ourselves barely able to hold on to what we had as it was since our current home had lost all its’ value and was “underwater” in terms of our mortgage.

“When you get what you want, that is God’s direction. When you don’t get what you want, that is God’s protection.” (Unknown)

The answer to my prayer was a resounding, “no” from God. God knows our past, present and future. While we went through financial pains after I lost my job, it would have been much worse if we had sold our house and moved to another one. Now when my prayers are not answered, I know either God is delaying because He has something better in mind for me, or He is protecting me from something.

“I know the plans that I have for you, declares the LORD. They are plans for peace and not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

My Prayer

Dear Lord, You can create out of nothing. I confess I am often blinded with doubt and my heart falls into despair grieving that you have not answered my prayer. You have shown me time and time again that you provide and protect far beyond what I can even contemplate at the time of my prayer. Forgive me Lord for doubting and not trusting You. Thank you for knowing me. Thank you for working on my behalf. Thank you for loving me that I may know Your presence and the joy of salvation through faith in You. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen

Getting to know God

I have written a journal since I was a young girl. In the last ten years I have kept a prayer journal to draw closer to God. Are you waiting for answers? Draw closer to God. I encourage you to begin a prayer journal today so you can know Him too. When you draw close to God, He will draw close to you. Is He trying to get your attention today? Why not draw closer to Him?

Getting Our Attention – A Faith Series is a four-part series. I am grateful that you have taken the time to read the fourth and final post in this series. I pray you will continue to follow The Prayer Journals blog.

Getting Our Attention, A Faith Series #3

In the first post in this series, Getting Our Attention, A Faith Series, I touched upon an unforeseen event that occurred in my life in the summer of 2009. It not only affected my life, but for many, especially in the United States. It was the economic crisis of 2008 that resulted from the mortgage industry bust. Never in my wildest imagination would I think my life would take such a dramatic and frightening turn as it did that summer. My career suddenly ended. My family’s entire future was at risk. The old aphorism comes to mind when we suddenly find ourselves in dire straits – “There are no atheists in foxholes.”

Yet God doesn’t only get our attention when unusual circumstances cause extreme stress or fear; He can turn us toward Him with wonderful unforeseen surprises too.

A Love Story

It was the year I would turn 31 years old. My father had passed away suddenly the year before. I began to take stock of my life and wondered about my future. I was single, unattached, and my friends had not only married, but we’re beginning to start a family. My career kept me traveling during the week and it was difficult to meet new people. I decided to put a personal advertisement in the local newspaper. This was before the Internet and personal ads were the thing then to meet new people and potential significant others.

After considering what qualities in a significant other I desired and the activities I enjoyed, I crafted a specific and concise personal ad. I decided that the photo was optional because after all, the person was taking a chance on my looks too.

Several weeks prior to placing that personal ad, my best friend suggested, “Perhaps God doesn’t want you to be married and have a family.” Like a dagger in my heart, I was crushed to think God did not want me to have a life companion. While I felt desperate at the time and I wondered if I was making the right choice in placing a personal ad in a newspaper, I relied on God to show me if I was meant to be with someone. I was willing to accept whatever direction and answer He gave me.

“Everyone should live the life that the Lord gave him when God called him.” 1 Corinthians 7: 17

After a few anxious days of my personal ad being published, I received a total of 24 letters many from whom had not bothered to read my personal ad. I had letters from men ranging in age far from my designated target range. There were inarticulate letters and others that seemed like essays on why they would be the “one.”

notecard1There was one card that kept drawing my attention. The handwriting on the envelope was small and neat. My heart had skipped a beat when I pulled the Henry Matisse note-card from the envelope. I had the exact same note-cards. After several days of examining and re-examining the note-card and gathering my courage, I decided to call him. After several weeks of dating, and discussing our individual hopes for the future, he asked me to marry him. Fearful of rushing too quickly into marriage, we waited a year before getting married on a Maui beach in Hawaii. In a few short weeks on February 14th, my husband and I will be married 27 years.

Love

“Love is patient. Love is kind. Love isn’t jealous. It doesn’t sing its own praises. It isn’t arrogant. It isn’t rude. It doesn’t think about itself. It isn’t irritable. It doesn’t keep track of wrongs. It isn’t happy when injustice is done, but it is happy with the truth. Love never stops being patient, never stops believing, never stops hoping, never gives up.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank you, Lord for getting my attention in unusual and unforeseen circumstances to that I may turn to You who knows me best. You have created us for companionship and have re-created us for fellowship in our Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you, Lord for helping me to find friendship among those who know the constant love and mercy of Your Son especially my husband. Help me to continue to live under your direction, always ready to hear the call, “Follow me.” Pour into me Your good Spirit, so that I am not afraid to follow, and fall, and follow again. In Jesus Christ’s name, I pray. Amen
