40 Days of Lent – Reflections #2, A Series

Am I ready?

Am I ready to be identified with the death of Jesus Christ?

When I began Lent, I vowed I would fast intermittently by eating 1 or 2 meals a day with fasting a minimum of 18 hours. Not only did I want to purify myself to draw closer to God, but ease myself back into intermittent fasting for health in mind, body, and spirit.

When I see myself in the light of God, I am deeply ashamed of myself. I am ashamed I have not kept my word to fast; but horrified that my fasting was self-centered. The beauty of Christ is his forgiveness. And as I draw closer to God in His light, He shows me through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ – forgiveness.

On this Sunday, The Prayer Journals’ 6-Week Lenten Series to spiritual awakening with daily fasting, prayer with a prayer journal prompt for personal reflection, I want to desire God more deeply than anything else even food for my physical body.

12 DAY - 40 DAYS OF LENT

Taking On Something or Giving Up Something

A Twitter friend, @PoliticLutheran tweeted this last week, “I don’t practice giving things up for Lent. For the last several years, I have been practicing taking something on. Whether that means focusing more on something or being more mindful, I find it to be more meaningful spiritual practice…”

I have contemplated his tweet about “taking something on” since he tweeted this a few days ago. And when I look back on this past week’s Bible verse and daily prayer prompt reflections that I have posted on The Prayer Journals Facebook page, there IS much to take on.

40 DAYS OF LENT - Series #2 Post
While I strive to intermittently fast, the meaning of fasting has changed for me. In order to desire God more deeply, I must fully surrender my personal notion of fasting to taking on the purpose of spiritual awakening through fasting. I must surrender all sin, purifying myself to take on joy, to take on peace, to take on simplicity and dousing the light of arrogance with taking on the light of Jesus Christ.

I have written in a previous post the beauty of angels among us when God is trying to show us the right path. This past week @PoliticLutheran was that angel for me with showing me it is not the fasting of food, but rather taking on the light of Jesus Christ through my fasting. I am to surrender all that draws me away from the light of Christ to be truly identified with the death of Jesus Christ.

I continue to pray for all those who follow this blog and who are joining me on Facebook for this Lenten series. If you are being blessed by it, I hope you will share this post and the Facebook posts with others who also want to desire God more deeply.
